MoodleBox and Moodle 5.2

Hi all,
today Moodle HQ published the new Moodle 5.2 release. I am very interested if the new software will run on the MoodleBox 4.11.1 without any problem. Moodle has changed many things in the engine room. And no, Moodle 5.2 does not start without problems!

This description worked for me all the time until the Moodle folder was restructured in Moodle 5.1. It was a great work that Nicolas found the correct way to install Moodle 5.1. And now again ... Moodle 5.1 can't be upgraded to Moodle 5.2 with the instructions in the upgrade guide ... and the instructions are totally correct!

The Moodle 5.2 scripts changed again and we need to wait for good ideas. I get the message:
Error: Named route does not exist for name: core\route\controller\esm_controller::serve

This is surprising, but I have to say I didn't try to upgrade.

Anyway, I'm testing a build with Moodle 5.2, and it works beautifully.

I just upgraded to Moodle 5.2 from a freshly cloned MoodleBox image 4.11.1, without problem. I cannot reproduce your issue.

When are you getting the error ?

I'm not blaming you. Moodle HQ seems to have tightened some scripts in the last week before the release of Moodle 5.2.

With my upgrade of an empty MoodleBox 4.11.1, I simply wanted to test whether anything would go wrong. Several platforms I manage are due for an upgrade from Moodle 5.0 to 5.1 or 5.2. I'm still looking for solutions before I start working on production platforms. An empty MoodleBox is simply brilliant for such experiments... you can't break anything and you can quickly revert to the original state.

Good news!

I tried the upgrade to Moodle 5.2 once more with a fresh copied microSD card. As the last time I used Raspberry Pi Imager 2.0.7 on my Linux laptop. Now it works perfectly.

cd /var/www/moodle/
sudo -u www-data -g moodlebox git config remote.origin.fetch "+refs/heads/*:refs/remotes/origin/*"
sudo -u www-data -g moodlebox git fetch origin
sudo -u www-data -g moodlebox git checkout MOODLE_502_STABLE

sudo -u www-data -g moodlebox php admin/cli/maintenance.php --enable
sudo -u www-data -g moodlebox php admin/cli/upgrade.php 
sudo -u www-data -g moodlebox php admin/cli/maintenance.php --disable

sudo git config --global --add safe.directory /var/www/moodle
sudo git branch -d MOODLE_501_STABLE

sudo git branch 
* MOODLE_502_STABLE
sudo git pull
Already up to date.

I just upgraded my MoodleBox to Moodle 5.2 and it seems to work very well.

But I just got this error:
Exception - Class "Mustache_Engine" not found

Why this is happening nowMoodle version 5.1 and newer now require Composer to manage core dependencies. If you upgraded via Git or a "core-only" package, the vendor folder (which contains the Mustache engine) was likely left empty, causing your original error.

Did you do exactly the steps I wrote in the post https://discuss.moodlebox.net/d/515-moodlebox-and-moodle-52/6 ?

I tried all these steps one more with a fresh copy of the image moodleBox-4.11.1.img.xz . And I got a well running MoodleBox 4.11.1 with Moodle 5.2 (20260501). The vendor folder is not empty after my upgrade process. Perhaps you downloaded the Moodle folder from the GitHub and switched the old Moodle folder to the new one. In this case the vendor folder stays in the old Moodle folder and is not part of the new one.

I hope you get it running. I like the MoodleBox very much. It is perfect to try all the things you should not try with a productive running platform.

There seems to be a typo in:

sudo -u www-data -g moodlebox git config remote.origin.fetch "+refs/heads/:refs/remotes/origin/"
sudo -u www-data -g moodlebox git fetch origen
sudo -u www-data -g moodlebox git checkout MOODLE_502_STABLE

the word 'origin' is written as 'origen' in the second line.

But otherwise, it seemed to upgrade to 5.2 very fast

Yes, the typo in the Spanish upgrade documentation must be fixed by Nicolas.

But the issue that I would really love to be added to the Documentation of the MoodleBox is the fact that you CAN run it from an (relatively) unexpensive cellphone powerbank for HOURS without an AC supply.

This raises the usefulness of the MoodleBox by one order of magnitud.

The MoodleBox is a very poweful tool for testing, but also for working in a difficult environment away from a city.

I will use it for quizzes in the classroom that do not need the support from my school IT department.
